Campfires in Cyberspace
Abstract:
Media are not interchangeable -- a learner using the Web has a completely different experience from one watching television. Classroom presentations are fundamentally different from videos of the same class. As we use more and more electronic media in education, it is essential that we understand the unique nature of each expressive medium we encounter.
This presentation suggests that learning takes place in four spaces, only a few of which are honored in most schools. This presentation is based on Dr. Thornburg's new theory for educational systems -- a theory based on four primordial learning spaces: campfires (information), watering holes (conversation), caves (concept), and life (context).
The theory is explored in a highly practical manner, and participants will be provided with research results showing the current strengths and weaknesses of classrooms, along with tips on how technology can be used to bring balance back into our educational system. The utility of these four learning spaces is demonstrated in the context of the World Wide Web as an educational tool, and participants will leave with a new framework for evaluating Web sites and other technological tools as educational resources.
Anyone interested in creating an educational system geared to the needs of learners and educators alike will find this session to be of value.
