Digital Imaging Across The Curriculum
Workshop 1:
Introduction to Digital Imaging in The ClassroomThis series of three workshops explores, in-depth, the use of digital imaging in the classroom. The first (basic) workshop addresses camera basics. The second (intermediate) explores image editing and effects needed for students to create projects across the curriculum. The third (advanced) workshop examines the process of project design from the perspective of different content areas and grade levels and is designed for participants who are comfortable with the skills explored in the first two workshops.
Abstract:
With the rapid growth of digital camera sales, educators have new opportunities to allow students to explore virtually any subject at almost every grade with the aid of these devices. This dynamic hands-on workshop introduces educators to the power of student-generated images and includes instruction on camera selection, basic camera use, composition, simple editing, and publishing of student projects either in print or for the web or CD-ROM.
The day starts with demonstrations of several image-based projects across curriculum and grade levels so participants can see, in advance, exactly how digital imaging can support solid curricular objectives. The remainder of the day focuses on the basics of camera (and scanner) use. In particular, participants will:
• Examine the camera selection process (including cameras built into cell phones and other handheld devices).
• Explore the features and operation of their own camera (note cameras can be provided for participants to keep as part of the workshop)
• Learn about printer and paper selection for various uses
• See how scanners operate and can be used as inexpensive student microscopesAfter this introduction to hardware, participants will then:
• Explore the basic rules of image composition
• Take pictures with their cameras to be used in the remainder of the workshopOnce pictures are taken, participants learn how to:
• Transfer images to the computer
• Catalog images and create simple slide shows
• Create image-based web sites
• Burn their finished images and projects onto a CD-ROMEach participant receives a complete course workbook and CD-ROM containing sample activities, resources, and demonstration versions of every software title used in the workshop. Note: If desired, this workshop can be offered with a bundled camera for the participants to keep. This option is available at an additional per-person fee. Contact the Thornburg Center for details.
