Why One to One Matters

Abstract:

With the rapid infusion of technology into student homes, many schools remain locked at a student/computer ratio of 4:1. Besides the growing disconnect between home-based and school-based access to these powerful learning tools, the 4:1 student/computer ratio allows educators to retain old pedagogical models that may no longer be adequate for students growing up in a world of rapid unpredictable changes affecting nearly all fields of study.

While 1:1 computing is getting a lot of attention, the results to date have proven to be mixed, and the stress of implementing and properly maintaining such a radical change is high. That said, the benefits have the potential to far outweigh the costs.
This dynamic presentation explores the issues behind 1:1 computing, examines the capabilities of various devices being promoted as student tools, and highlights the long-term benefits of this model for students across grade levels, in virtually all subject areas.
