Pencils Down:
How Norm-Referenced Testing is Corrupting Technology Use and Destroying Education

Abstract:

The increased push for high-stakes testing has reached the insane point that students in some schools were forced to take these exams on September 11, 2001 while tragedy was striking New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. Educators are so cowed by these tests they are abandoning rich educational practices in support of "test preparation". Technologies once applied to the creation of student-based media are now being enlisted as "test-prep" tools.

This presentation explores some of the underlying flaws in standardized norm-referenced tests, and, more importantly, explores alternative assessment tools that can help insure students meet high levels of excellence. Leave your number 2 pencils at home and learn why high standards has nothing whatever to do with standardized testing, and what to do about it!
