Computer-based Visualization Tools for Education

Abstract:

The author Neal Stephenson once said, "All information looks like noise until you break the code." As educational resources explode in size, purely text-based representations are too cumbersome for student researchers to use in their quest for knowledge. Instead of understandable data, too many young people see just meaningless noise. This dynamic presentation features new and emerging technologies that have the power to transform our relationship with raw data in ways that make it more meaningful, and that lead to improved strategies for student representations of their research. The presenter will demonstrate some affordable commercial products (e.g., Grokker, Visual Thesaurus, Kartoo, and others) and highlight some of the current research in an area that may represent the next major breakthrough in computer use by students and teachers alike.
