Hey, It's a Graphical World Out There!
The need for visual literacyAbstract:
It’s a visual world. Kids are immersed in an environment of visual bombardment that most adults find bewildering. This visual world has had a significant impact on the way kids get and process information. Unfortunately, this change has gone unnoticed by most educators. It's time for us to catch up with the world of color, photos, and movies that kids experience daily from magazines, TV, videos, multimedia software, computer games, cell phones, and the Internet. It is critical that teachers understand this world. We need to begin preparing our students with visual literacy skills at an early age so they can perceive the visual manipulation that is being targeted at young people.
In this presentation Ted will examine the impact of new media on how people receive messages. Using examples from modern publishing and the Internet. he will show attendees how some of the major concepts of visual literacy work to enhance communication. Everyone will leave with a much better understanding of how visual communication is constructed. This understanding will help anyone create better visual communications and it will help teachers better prepare their students to make sense of the visual world they experience every day.
