The Missing Link:
Tying technology use to the curriculum

Abstract:

The lack of meaningful use of technology in schools is a perplexing problem, especially in light of the large investment that has been made to make that technology available for teachers. For many educators, technology use is still perceived as an add-on that is not an essential part of what they teach in their classrooms. In this presentation, we will explore why this is the case for a great many teachers.

How can we make technology instruction an integral part of the every day learning experience of all students? Ted believes that if teachers can see technology as a tool for supporting what they already do, then increased technology use will naturally follow. Thus, this presentation will explore how technology can support the curriculum that is taught in schools today. One of the keys is for teachers to see that there are two important process-oriented thinking skills that are common to all areas of the curriculum – the writing process and the research process. We will explore how the structured thought that underlies writing and research applies across the curriculum. When teaching that structured thought is coupled with a focus on process oriented instruction, the role technology can play in increasing the effectiveness of our teaching becomes more clear.
