Creativity as a Work Skill in The Telematic Age
Thriving in a world where all the cards all wild!Abstract:
During the industrial era, much attention was focused on the split between "vocational" and "academic" skills, with a grounding in the arts falling in the category of (largely) elective courses. In today's fast-paced world where workers at all levels are expected to quickly make decisions with imperfect information, and tolerance for ambiguity is seen as a survival skill, a grounding in the creative arts suddenly becomes the pathway to acquiring a new basic skill.
The focus of this presentation is on the learner as artist or performer, with special emphasis on the role of improvisation as a vehicle for developing the skills needed to work in virtually any job today. While most of the examples will be musical, any educator who would like to reconnect with this most basic mode of human expression, and see how it can be coupled with modern technology, will find this a most interesting presentation.
