Jamming and The Art of Volitional Learning

Abstract:

The skills musicians display during jam sessions are very similar to the skills needed by learners of any age, no matter what topic is being explored. The blend of creativity, discipline, freedom, and diligent practice that allows musicians to sit in on performances with new bands at the last minute reflects a deep passion for music that, in an academic setting, leads to highly engaged learners. This presentation and workshop operates on the assumption that all learning is "volitional", it can't be forced. By exploring the educational climates that foster volitional learning and true learner engagement, this session provides concrete tools of benefit to any educator, with a special emphasis on project-based learning. Part lecture, part music, and part intellectual jam session, this presentation speaks to all educators. (Note: the one-hour session is primarily a lecture/demonstration.)
