Technologies of Liberation:
An educational model for the next century

Abstract:

The invention of writing threatened the storyteller. Mass-produced books threatened the scribes. And, today, classroom computers connected to the World-Wide-Web threaten the traditional teacher-centered educational structure of our past.

Today's learners, the children of generation.com, feel comfortable navigating through vast informational spaces whose scope was unimaginable only a few years ago. The textbook lies dead on the table, and educators who thrive in the didactic world of content delivery are threatened by the very revolution of knowledge we have all worked so hard to create.

This presentation will explore a future view of education where the major responsibility is on the learner, and the teacher becomes a co-learner and facilitator of the educational process. This vision includes a world where powerful computer-based telecommunications is as free as the air and water -- and where no learner is blocked from information. By acknowledging that we live in a world of informational abundance, this presentation celebrates the opportunity we have to transform educational practice worldwide!

Critical to this transformation is the need to address educational equity issues. These issues are explored as well from the perspectives of both the developed and the developing world.

Connections to the wired classrooms of today will ground this vision in the today's reality -- a reality where a select few have access to tools that we must make available to all.

The revolution will be different this time! Come to this presentation and find out why.
